Postil to the Sacred Memory of the Master Jan Hus, Martyr of God

Hus completed his collection of Czech sermons centred around passages from the Gospels, which were intended for reading on Sundays and feast days, in 1413. During that period, he was placed under an interdict by the Church. For each excerpt from the Gospel, he provided a literal interpretation, drawing upon references from other parts of the Scripture and texts written by the Church Fathers. Following this, he offered an explanation of the figurative or spiritual meaning of the Gospel excerpt, aimed at practical application in everyday life. However, it was not until 1563 that the Postil could be published in Nuremberg for the first time, supplemented by woodcuts from the circle of Lucas Cranach Sr. In the subsequent edition the following year, interpretations of the Sunday epistles by the Hussite theologian  Jakub of Stříbro were added.
