A Bouquet of Czech Folktales

Although the first edition of K.J. Erben’s collection of ballads, Kytice z pověstí národních (A Bouquet of Czech Folktales), was not published until 1853 by the publisher Jaroslav Pospíšil, Erben had been working on some of the ballads since the 1930s. Among the first, in 1834, he wrote Polednice (The Noon Witch), which was printed in 1840. The next one was Poklad (Treasure), written in 1837 and printed in 1838. For the second edition of A Bouquet, Erben added a section entitled Písně (Songs) with a selection of lyrical poems, and the ballad entitled Lilie (Lily).
