Zbyhoň. Illustration for The Manuscript of Zelená Hora and The Manuscript of Dvůr Králové

Inspiration by Mánes’s model was reflected in Aleš’s illustrations not only in the similar layout of the picture frames, but also in the typography of the characters and the composition of the multi-figural scenes. However, Aleš’s conception was much more dramatic, both in the choice of subjects and in the dynamic drawing. He related the mythological heroic themes to the canon of “Czech national art”, based on their natural and popular qualities. At the time of the illustrations, the questioning of the authenticity of the Manuscripts was gaining momentum. Aleš’s adaptation was therefore met with cold disinterest as Mánes’s earlier.
