Jaroslav. Illustration of the Zelená Hora and Dvůr Králové Manuscript

The inspiration of Mánes' model was evident in Aleš's illustrations not only in the similar layout of the picture frames, but also in the typography of the characters and the composition of the multifigured scenes. However, Aleš's concept was much more dramatic both in the choice of subjects and in the dynamic manner of drawing. He linked mythological heroic themes with the canon of "Czech national art", based on natural and folksy qualities. At the time of the illustrations, the questioning of the authenticity of the Manuscripts was gaining momentum. Aleš's treatment was therefore met with cold disinterest similar to Mánes's earlier one.
