Manuscript of Magistrate František Vavák’s The Song of the Russians in Bohemia

Until the passage of Russian troops through the Czech lands during the Napoleonic Wars, the Czechs’ ideas about Russia and its people were rather vague. The interest that the Tsar's army aroused during its time spent in Prague among Czech patriots stemmed mainly from the soldiers’ exotic appearance and linguistic proximity. But the experience of the Czech rural community was different. František Vavák – a Milčice magistrate, scribe, Czech patriot, and author of an extensive memoir – channelled his experiences with the Russian army in a short New Year’s song.
