Postcard to Jaromír John (1939)

Prague, 14 Feb. 1939
Dear Doctor,
Thank you very much for your letter. I hope that the publisher F. Borový has sent you your author’s copy of K. M. as well as your fee for your article. I regret that I cannot use your articles, which I will immediately return to you: the one about the lecture mania would make for an excellent newspaper column and your writing on the fate of our country would have been a repetition of similar articles in K. M. In addition, it is written for the flap of a book, of a novel and I do not allow, on principle, artists to speak pro domo sua in K. M. or on behalf of their own work. Please don’t hold it against me! Nevertheless, let me send you a conto for your future valuable work a small advance from F. Borový for the two smaller articles that you mentioned. That way, we will receive them from you soon. How about some essay on historical Czech patience,
which you write about in “Polygenerational Person”? We would be able to use this entire article from the second page, but I certainly don’t want to cut parts and don’t dare to modify it.
Thanking you in advance and sincerely yours,
Václav Černý
