Bust of Eduard Vojan
As an art form, a bust implies the presence of the whole body solely through the orientation of the head and the focus of the gaze, providing a glimpse into the subject’s personality. The contemplative expressions on the faces of both Štursa’s Hlaváček and Biegas’s Marten convey creative concentration and a rich inner world. In comparison to these two figures, Amort’s Marold – as a painter – appears more attentive to his surroundings, while the actor Vojan in Štursa’s sculpture appears to react to them expressively and dramatically. Vojan’s expression also raises the question of the relationship between the mask and the face: did the sculptor capture the famous actor himself, or one of his roles? And isn’t an artist’s face always covered by some kind of mask?
