A Pictorial History of the Czecho-Slovak Nation, Part II
At the end of the 19th century, picture series depicting the national past based on František Palacký’s concept of Czech history, gained popularity. As part of a series of popular history works and school textbooks, this established canon of collectively shared ideas about the past more easily reached the broader public. Illustrations of key moments in the narrative were not merely supplementary to the text; they defined what was important to remember and emphasized key moments in the storyline. The repeated depiction of the same scenes reinforce the perceived truth. There was only one interpretation of the national past—one that was binding and unchangeable.
