Cover design (Flame) by Ivan Urbánek

The discontinued magazines Květen (May, 1950-1959) and Nový život (New Life, 1949-1959) were replaced by the newly established Plamen (Flame, 1959-1969), whose main task was to promote ideologically and artistically sound methods of creative work and criticism and to remain committed to all the party’s causes. However, what made Plamen stood stand out among cultural periodicals was its abundant artwork, Oldřich Hlavsa's imaginative graphic design, and, above all, its choice of top-quality contributors.
