Decorative design sketch
There is a vivacity, directness, and dynamism to Jan Preisler's sketches. It was for these qualities that his contemporaries came to value this sketch as a significant work of art in and of itself. Previously, it had been considered a mere preparatory draft for a more significant artwork. The sketch shows how an idea takes shape, how the artist finds clarity for the intended direction of the idea, and how the idea of the work lives within him. It is perhaps not surprising how often draperies appear in these studies. Their unpredictable folds represent the dark depths of the artist's inner life, from which the artwork, the artist's world, and even the artist himself arise.
