Production of the first Prague ‘Quarter-Hourly’ - Humoristické listy, 1910, No. 15

In the speculative imagination of the era, journalism and newspaper publishing were closely tied to the accelerated pace of life and emerging technologies—both in Neruda’s time and beyond. In this cartoon from the April 1910 issue of Humoristické listy, an edition entirely devoted to the future, the caption continues with the text: ‘An epochal invention of the XXI century. Just say the most frequently used words into special funnels, and the machine will modify, wrap, and print them into the relevant articles.’ Today, we might interpret this as a prediction of artificial intelligence and its capacity to generate coherent texts from ‘prompts’ or keywords.
