Jiří Valenta, Bílé masky
The author’s offprint, measuring 30.6 x 24.2 cm, was created in 1958. It consists of two parts: the smaller introductory section, titled Vítr (Wind), contains typewritten poems by Pavel Škop, accompanied by Valenta’s small black-and-white linocuts; the larger section (30.5 x 23.5 cm) features nine full-page black-and-white linocuts, depicting simplified faces transformed into negative signs. One of these facial signs is used imaginatively as the cover of the entire piece. Valenta printed the edition himself on handmade paper, producing twenty copies in his studio on Palmovka Street in Prague. The collection of nine linocuts, titled Bílé Masky (White Masks), was first exhibited at the artist’s retrospective at the Waldstein Riding School in Prague in 1995. It is presented here as a complete set for the first time.
